SKIPTON Golf Club crowed men’s and ladies club champions recently following the conclusion of the match play finals.

The ladies championship was contested by Dagmar Hecker-Woodhead and Sarah Coy and was a close affair all the way round.

Both players held the advantage during the course of the contest with the early lead held by Hecker-Woodhead.

This was a match where holes swapped hands on a regular basis though and it was Coy who had gained the advantage towards the end and after wins at both the 14th and 15th holes of the second round was in the enviable position of being 3up with just three holes to play.

Hecker-Woodhead came back to win the 16th but could only halve the next to give Coy a 2&1 victory.

The men’s final between Max Berrisford and Gavin Stocker produced some stunning golf.

The contest was littered with no fewer than two eagles and 15 birdies between the pair in less than good conditions.

Berrisford held a slender 1up advantage after the first 18 holes and started the stronger in the second round.

His opening four holes produced birdies at each of them to extend his lead to 4up, but Stocker produced his own birdie rush to win the seventh and eighth holes to be back to just two down.

Berrisford won both of the next two, but Stocker then holed his chip on the 12th to reduce the deficit.

Not to be outdone, Berrisford then holed for an eagle on the 13th from over 100 yards and a win at the next gave him a 5&4 winning margin.

* Golfers at Settle Golf Club were delighted to be able to resume competitive golf after the recent poor spell of weather.

In the final summer medal competition it was the ever-consistent John Read who added to the impressive collection silverware that he amassed during the course of the season.

Read's net 76 proved good enough to take the title and gave him a three-shot victory over the runner-up Duncan Brown, whose son Henry came in with a very respectable net 82.

Earlier in the week, the senior section of the club had an excellent turnout to compete for the Eric Ralph Trophy.

Mike Robins, having recently won the Toffs Championship Cup, again produced the round of the day to take this latest trophy with a two-shot victory over John Terry.

The club championship competitions came to a close recently and it was Chris Ward who dominated proceedings.

In the doubles, he partnered Steve Robinson and after a closely fought contest they finally held off the challenge of Anthony Cokell and Martin Scaife to deservedly take the title.

In the singles final, Ward's consistency proved to be the decisive factor against Steve O'Shea, thus giving Ward his second title of the season.
