MATILDA McKibbon went through the pain barrier to finish on the podium in the eighth round of the Yorkshire Points Cyclo-Cross Series in Bradford.

The Settle College student came second behind Ilkley's Freya Whiteside (East Bradford Race Team) in the under-14 girls' category at the Peel Park Supacross.

The 14-year-old from Skipton said: "I started off quite fast but then I got cut up a little bit by other people which made me lose first place's wheel and then I just kept going as hard as I could.

"I had a battle with third place (Huddersfield Star Wheelers' Amy Mourne) but managed to lose her by the end.

"I was tired by the finish and my legs hurt."

McKibbon described the course, which was slicker than normal, as hard, and explained: "There were a lot of off-cambers and was quite a fast course with long straights.

"But I preferred last year's course and prefer it muddy."

Her attention now switches to Sunday's National Championships at Shrewsbury, where she hopes to finish in the top ten if on form.
