WHILST I applaud cyclists being brought into line with us motorists when it comes to using the roads, I’m pretty sure two things will happen.

Firstly, cyclists will blame drivers and the Government, if such legislation is put into law, rather than the minority of bad cyclists who have brought this about. Secondly, unless the roads are policed more effectively than they are now any new laws will be unenforceable.

The transport secretary is saying that as well as having to have some form of number plate and insurance to make cyclists traceable and culpable, they will also be able to be dealt with for breaking speed limits.

Again a good idea, however, as far as I’m aware pedal cycles don’t normally come off the production line with a speedometer fitted. Without one fitted it will be very difficult to prove someone was aware they were breaking the speed limit!.

But let’s hope that none of this will put the Government off because these selfish cyclists need to be dealt with for their flagrant abuses of the law.
