TEN-man Barnoldswick Town battled heroically to make the second round of the FA Vase at the weekend, edging Selby Town 5-4 in a nine-goal thriller.

A Ben Ashton strike right at the death was enough to see Barlick through to the next round of the competition after a game packed with drama.

It only took two minutes for Barlick to break the deadlock and it was the perfect taster of what was to come; an own goal being scored by Conor Qualter after a corner was delivered by fullback McCauley Smith.

Selby would soon be level after surging back through Liam Flanagan. He hit a fine strike in off the post to make matters even.

A minute later Barnoldswick restored their lead, with Ashton scoring his first of the game; volleying a fantastic strike into the bottom right-hand corner and Andy Hill added a third for the hosts on minute 19.

Amidst the end-to-end action, McCauley Smith went off with a serious ankle injury, delevering a huge blow to the home side.

The visitors then pulled one back, but three minutes from the interval Alex Moloney struck a deflected shot into the corner of the net to ensure Barlick went in 4-2 up at the break.

However, despite cruising in the game, the second half would bring problems to the home side after Gareth Hill was shown a straight red card for a foul just after half-time, leaving Barlick with a lot of work to do.

The visitors brought the tie back to four apiece, however, up stepped Ashton to fizz a delightful shot into the bottom left-hand corner of the goal; causing chaos and unbridled joy in the home end.

The fulltime whistle blew and Barlick hung on to an impressive 5-4 victory, and they have been drawn at home to Horden Community Welfare FC in the second round of the FA Vase.

The game will be played on the November 12 at the Silentnight Stadium
