BARNOLDSWICK’S return to competitive action ended in defeat as Northwich Victoria struck twice to condemn Andy Harrison’s side to a 2-0 defeat on Saturday.

Barlick had not played since February 15 after postponements were announced for their fixtures with Bury and Northwich Victoria.

However, the return to football once again highlighted the difficulties that Barnoldswick are facing – Saturday’s fixture being their fourth consecutive league defeat. Relegation is becoming a distinct possibility.

In a fairly lacklustre first half, Northwich’s Damola Sotona would break the deadlock just before the break. The forward received a favourable bounce in Barnoldswick’s penalty area before firing a crisp half volley beyond the reach of Henry Turner.

Prior to the goal, Barlick’s MCcauley Smith was fortunate to be still on the pitch after taking out the home side’s left winger, however he only received a yellow card on this occasion.

Northwich’s second goal would come six minutes from time, with Kuda Chingwaro striking a beauty. The ball fell to him from 35 yards out and he made no mistake in drilling a sweet volley into the back of Turner’s net – putting the finishing touches on a fairly dominant home display.

Barnoldswick’s rearranged league fixture with Northwich Victoria will be played tonight at the Silentnight Stadium. A victory would be huge for Harrison’s men in their bid for safety. They currently sit 17th in the division.

In other news, this morning Barlick confirmed the signing of highly rated attacker Max Cane.

The striker has joined the club from Clitheroe and will add a great deal of pace, power and versatility to Barnoldswick’s attacking options.

Previously of Nelson and Padiham, Cane has made a reputation off being a prolific striker over the years – something that Barlick are craving at the minute after a dismal recent run.

The club commented: “Max is a fantastic signing for us and one that shows the direction in which we are trying to take this club. He will add even more pace and power to our attacking options along with the added experience from playing regularly in the league above.

“He's also a proven goal scorer at every level he has played at, so it’s a huge signing for us.”
