THIS year represents a major milestone in the history of Wharfedale Rugby Union Football Club, formerly Upper Wharfedale RUFC, as their first fixture was played in the autumn of 1923 (no precise date it known), a century ago.

On June 16 Wharfedale will be hosting a Centenary Dinner for approximately 400 people, and this will be followed by a Mini and Junior Celebration weekend over two days on September 30 and October 1, while the aim will be to have an attendance of over 1000 at the home match that weekend.

On December 26 the traditional friendly match versus North Ribblesdale will feature support for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue, two local charities very close to the club’s heart. To culminate all this, it is hoped that the end of season Players’ Dinner will see a host of current players, ex-players and coaches and other guests coming together to celebrate over 100 years of rugby at Wharfedale. The aim is also to have a Sports Lunch or Dinner; the date and venue still need to be confirmed with guest speakers and auctions.

On Saturday, 30 September the following events are taking place at Wharfedale RUFC:

- Wharfedale Under 16 Girls v West Park, Leeds Under 16 Girls as a curtain raiser.

- Wharfedale’s 1st XV v Sheffield’ 1st XV (league game)

- Wharfedale Colts v Sheffield Colts on 2nd team pitch.

Plus a BBQ, raffle, a silent auction and ducking stool (to be continued on Sunday) will follow.

In the evening live music from Callum Spencer and DJ JD will be played, with the bar being open till late.

On Sunday 1 October the Minis and Juniors’ Tournament will take place, while there be more events added to the schedule later this year.
