THE recently completed Skipton Community Sports Hub has landed its first big name guest – with Anthony McGrath, the head coach of Yorkshire County Cricket Club.
McGrath will be dropping in on the new £1million venue later this month to talk all things cricket with BBC commentator, Jonathan Doidge - an event not to be missed by all cricket fans.
A right-handed batsman who scored well over 20,000 runs in a career that saw him play for both Yorkshire and England, McGrath was appointed head coach of Yorkshire in October 2024 and spent the winter months busily preparing for the county’s first season back in the Division 1 since 2022.
He’ll be interviewed by BBC Radio Leeds’ Yorkshire cricket commentator, Jonathan Doidge, whose illustrious career has seen him cover Test Matches, World Cups, international T20 tournaments and domestic cricket on radio and television for the BBC, Sky, Radio Yorkshire and Spotlight Sports.
Malcolm Birks, chair of Skipton Community Sports Hub, Sandylands, Carleton New Road, said: “We’re thrilled to be welcoming Anthony McGrath and Jonathan Doidge to the hub for what promises to be a night of fascinating insight, cricket stats and, we all hope, truly hilarious stories about the various players Anthony played with and has since gone on to coach!”
The event takes places on Friday April 25 at 7.30pm. Tickets are £25 each and include a pie and peas supper. They can be purchased by emailing skiptoncommunitysportshub@gmail.com.
The Skipton Community Sports Hub is a joint project by Skipton Juniors FC and Skipton Cricket Club, which opened in Autumn 2024. The 3,500sq ft building supports the sporting activities of around 600 children and young people from the area; as well as serving the wider Skipton community as the host of various community groups, clubs and celebrations.
“Since opening towards the end of last year’s cricket season, The Hub has firmly established itself as Skipton’s busiest new venue,” added Malcolm. “It’s hosted everything from bingo nights to ceilidhs, birthday parties to annual awards nights and has also become a popular spot for a drink on a Friday night or a coffee and a bacon roll on a Saturday or Sunday morning.
“If you’ve not already been, then I would encourage you to pay a visit.”
