Embsay Under-17s were given a huge leg-up towards defending their Upper Airedale Junior League's William Spencer Memorial Cup final by their opening batsmen.

Lloyd Davies and Josh Robinson put on 100 against Sutton at Silsden, both batsmen reaching their half-centuries and having to retire.

It wasn’t until 14-year-old third change bowler Ben Whit-field came on that Sutton came back into the match.

He bowled Waris Kamal at 128 and induced Joe Holt to edge to keeper Simon Todd four runs later.

Arslan Hussein (22) followed at 148 and Tom Holmes became Whitfield’s fourth victim at 164.

The double Upper Airedale Junior League prize-winner finished with 5-39 in an innings of 187-7.

Sutton’s hopes were pinned on the partnership between Luke Chapman and Amjid Hussein.

But the latter went for seven to make it 55-3, and instead wicket-keeper Simon Todd and Chapman did the damage, Todd hitting several sixes on his way to 48 before being dismissed at 133 following a 78-run stand.

Chapman needed a reliable partner but was himself out for 44 by Robinson off Arslan Hussein as the innings folded for 150.

Kamal took 3-24 and Arslan Hussein 3-45 but Robinson was man of the match for his 51.
