A Queen Margaret’s education is an exciting, challenging and balanced experience. Our girls are part of a community of people who care for each other and grow as individuals. When a girl has completed her education at QM she will be a free thinking, courageous individual, prepared to take her learning to the next level and her place in the modern world.

Queen Margaret’s is a modern school for girls who aspire to be leaders in every walk of life. QM girls take advantage of the rich and complementary programme of studies and activities available to them. In doing so, we hope that they will:

    Curriculum Overview
    At Queen Margaret’s girls study a wide range of subjects. We believe that this breadth of education is essential if wise and informed choices are to be made for GCSEs and beyond. It does mean that the students are very busy and academic organisation is central to success. Tutors help by monitoring the workloads of their tutees and giving advice on organisation.

    The following terminology is used throughout the curriculum:
    Lower School – Years I, II and III (National Curriculum Years 7, 8 and 9)
    GCSE Years – Years IV and V (National Curriculum Years 10 and 11)
    Sixth Form – LVI and UVI (National Curriculum Years 12 and 13)

    Years 7 – 9
    In the Lower School girls follow a broad curriculum, which becomes more focused in Year 9 as they are guided to a balanced range of subjects for GCSE study. Departments do not confine themselves to the content of the National Curriculum but tailor their courses to the needs and abilities of the girls in ways that will stimulate, challenge and excite young minds.

    Years 10 – 11
    During the GCSE years twenty-four subjects are offered. All girls study English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Science (either the core and additional science or the three separate sciences) and a modern foreign language. In addition, most girls opt to study three or four other subjects. Once girls have made their GCSE selections, the timetable is developed around their chosen subjects.
    Years 12 – 13
    In the Sixth Form twenty-seven subjects are offered to AS and A2 level. Guided by their tutors girls select A level subjects and once again a timetable is built around their choices. At AS level most girls opt to study four or five subjects, reducing to three or four at A2 level.

    ICT skills are taught in dedicated lessons in Years 7 to 9 and further developed as appropriate in individual academic subjects. Careers and Higher Education Guidance, Study Skills and Personal, Social and Health Education programmes also form part of the Academic extension lessons. Girls are also exposed to current affairs and their general knowledge, problem solving and critical thinking skills are built upon through the extension programme.

    Participation and excellence in Sport are essential parts of school life. Girls in all years have some form of timetabled physical activity on most days as well as numerous opportunities to represent the school across a range of sports.
    Pastoral Care
    Education, especially boarding school education, is a partnership between parents and the school, and while we expect to earn the trust and confidence of parents to educate their daughters, we welcome parental involvement and participation at all levels. In addition to the formal annual meetings between staff and parents, we are pleased to respond to queries or concerns by e-mail, telephone or letter. There is a wide network of Pastoral Care for the girls at Queen Margaret's. We are a busy school with a full programme of musical, religious, sporting and weekend activities, frequent concerts, productions and performances and other similar events at which parental support is always welcome.

    The Housemistress or Housemaster is usually the first point of contact for all parents, whether a girl is in need of formal advice or just a sympathetic ear. For academic support and guidance, each girl has a Tutor and a Head of Year who meet regularly with the Housestaff. Any serious matters affecting an individual girl's progress or welfare are referred to the Headmaster or Deputy Head.

    QM is proud to be a full boarding school, with 85% of our students boarding, however we offer all the extension and enrichment opportunities to day girls too. Each day girl has her own bed, which she may use on any night of the week (or weekend) to ensure that she does not miss out on the trips, productions and parties.

    It is our intention to allow the girls to grow up gradually from eleven to eighteen. By the time girls leave QM, they will have forged friendships which will last for a lifetime and they will move on as happy and confident young women.

    The boarding at QM is arranged horizontally. Girls begin in Red House (Year 7), a large farm house. It is a safe and homely environment for the girls to learn to live together. From there they transfer to Howard House (Year 8) in the main building, a Georgian mansion with spectacular views over Escrick Park. Whilst they have dedicated staff and space, they are able to benefit form shared social and study facilities and libraries.

    Girls stay in the main building (in either Scarborough House or Atholl House for Years 9 and 10), before moving to the modern Winifred Holtby House for Year 11. With its purpose-built studies and bedrooms (each accommodating four girls) arranged conveniently together, we provide an excellent environment for the girls in their 'GCSE year'. The Lower Sixth (Year 12) occupy twin study bedrooms in the Cloisters at the heart of the school. The Upper Sixth (Year 13) live in a series of cottages within the school grounds. Grouped with between four to eight friends, depending upon the size of the cottage, the girls have kitchens, living rooms and the opportunities to test out a degree of independent living before going to university.

    Queen Margaret's professional and friendly team are approachable and helpful supplying first class food along with top quality service. Varied, nutritious, well balanced and above all delicious, QM Catering offers a wide choice of food to cater for all tastes.
    Meals are usually taken in the school’s dining room which seats up to one hundred and fifty. The light, airy room is the perfect place to relax and enjoy good food. Service at the two serveries is slick and professional ensuring that queues are kept to a minimum.

    School menus rotate on a tri-weekly basis and are created with input from staff and students via the School Council. As well as catering for vegetarians QM’s kitchens can provide varied and balanced choices for a number of other special dietary requirements including, but not limited to, coeliac, lactose intolerant and low cholesterol.

    Medical Centre
    The school has its own Medical Centre in the Cloisters. Whilst there are daily surgery times, the team of Sisters are on call throughout the day and night to offer emergency care and physical or emotional support. The School Medical Officer holds surgeries at school on Monday and Friday and, along with her colleagues at the Escrick surgery, will also see students by appointment at the Escrick GP surgery. The School Counsellor is available for confidential advice.

    Weekend Activities
    The school runs a full and varied weekend programme of events, trips and activities. These might include opportunities to develop shooting or fencing skills, make Venetian masks or Easter chocolates or be part of Glee Club. Trips out may be to a Premier League football game, ice skating, the cinema, museums or shops. Trips further afield, such as to Edinburgh are also organised. Social events are organised in conjunction with other schools (Aysgarth, Sedbergh and Merchiston) throughout the year.
