LAST week's Craven Curiosity proved a bit of a challenge.

Reader David Heather, of Settle, suggested that it could be a device for viewing or projecting a simulated image of a solar eclipse.

He is on the right lines as it is a piece of optometry equipment.

Experts from Craven Museum and Gallery tell us: "This metal piece has a cylinder which consists of a lens, black wooden handle and a ruler indicating age, dioptres, a conclave and convex.

"It is produced by FA Hardy and Co, based in Chicago, and it is from 1902.

"It is unknown how this item appeared in the Craven area, but it could have been imported from the US in batches and sold not just in the UK, but also across the world.

"Similar items such as this one here, although now slightly rusted are still in perfect working order today. This is an early example of pioneering optometrics and built to a high standard."

All Craven Curiosities can be viewed in the newly reopened Craven Museum in Skipton Town Hall.

Meanwhile we are inviting guesses on this week’s mystery object. Suggestions should be emailed to news@cravenherald.co.uk
