Sunday saw runners of all ages descend on Kettlewell for the second race in the BOFRA Championship. Like most of the local fell races it’s short – 1½ miles – and sharp with plenty of rough terrain to negotiate over the 600ft climb. These races require strong lungs, agility and a good turn of speed from the start to the finish line.

Sunday saw the Kendal Winter League presentation at the People’s Hall Sedbergh, It followed a race round the Howgills. The league consists of a series of races held from the start of January through to April and is well supported. The senior men’s championship was won last year by Wharfedale’s Sam Watson but he did not defend his title.

Ambleside Sports is one of the classic events of the fell running year. The setting of the showground is magnificent as it forms a natural arena nestling amongst the fells forming Fairfield Horse- shoe.

A strong contingent of local fell runners headed across the border to Scotland to tackle the Torry – a mountain that shadows the Alva Games showground. Helm Hill runner Alastair Dunn has won the senior fell race on six previous occasions and he was back to defend his crown.
