A PERFORMING arts group who support youngsters with special needs will tackle the issue of bullying in a musical being performed at Skipton Town Hall this summer.

Members of GTS Performing Arts, are getting ready to perform the musical Bully! on July 7 and 8.

"GTS has started a new project about bullying, and we've decided to put on musical in July, said GTS director Dev Swan. "As it is such a important subject we are not charging for under 18s and we're inviting any young people's clubs and their adult supervisors to come along free of charge."

He said: "It is a generous-spirited, heart-warming musical that touches performers and audiences alike, leaving everyone encouraged.

"Young performers find the plot engaging and relevant, and can easily identify with the characters.

"Drama is a safe way in which to explore sensitive social issues, and Bully! is not only a great show, it's also highly recommended as a learning experience."

Kim is the boss of an aggressive girl gang, and one of their victims is a boy called Jake.

When one of Kim's gang, Ellie, steals his phone, Jake is afraid to go home and face his mum.

He runs away, helped by his friend Danny. It is only later that Danny discovers Kim, his own sister, is Jake's tormentor.

When Danny confronts Kim, she tries to excuse herself by explaining that she has been bullied in the past. Danny is not impressed. But Kim's gang back her up, saying they need the gang to feel strong because they too have experienced being bullied.

Jake begins to make a general connection - people who are victimised may later become bullies.

GTS, which has been going for 13 years, supports youth who have special needs.

Dev said: "GTS helps the kids with life skills, and they love performing."

The group's most recent performance, Hansel and Gretel and The Panto, was held at Skipton Little Theatre in December.

An evening performance of Bully! will be staged on Saturday, July 7, with a matinee taking place on Sunday, July 8.
