A terrier has been rescued more than a week after it vanished down a hole in Littondale.

Pug was recovered yesterday by his owner, who had spent days with friends digging to reach the terrier in the Darnbrook area.

The dog was found alive and well after they dug down about 25 feet.

Pug had squeezed through the tiny hole on Tuesday May 6 when chasing a fox and then failed to emerge.

His owner alerted the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association to see if they could reach the animal. Four members dashed to the scene, but were unable to recover Pug despite attempting to enlarge the hole, said an association spokesman.

"It was hoped that when the dog became hungry, it would return to the surface on its own to a good meal and a warm welcome," he added.

But it appears that Pug was unable to find a way back to the surface, so its owner and friends set about digging him out.
