A Burnsall pub is celebrating more than 20 years of ownership by well-known local family.

Andrew and Elizabeth Grayshon bought the Red Lion Hotel on November 21, 1991.

Although they are now retired, the couple kept the business in the family with their four daughters taking over the running of the pub, which also has 25 rooms, a function room and five holiday cottages in the village.

Eldest daughter Sarah Stockdale organises weddings, second daughter Victoria Rowley is in charge of accounts and her husband Jim is bar manager.

The youngest daughters, twins Katy Verot and Eleanor Brown, deal with staff, marketing and conferences. Katy is married to head chef Olivier and Eleanor’s husband, Charlie, is also a chef in the kitchen.

Katy said that her family and the village were so intertwined that one of their loyal customers recently told them they always enjoyed their visits to “Grayshonville”.

They believe the Red Lion was the second longest running family-owned pub in the Dales.

“For us, it’s most important to keep the business in the family,” said Katy. “But we’re also always looking to grow, improve and develop.

“We have an emphasis on using local suppliers and being right on the bank on the River Wharfe we cater for a real cross section of people.”
