Councillors have called for a joint campaign between two councils to tackle the problem of traffic congestion through a South Craven community.

They want North Yorkshire and Lancashire County Councils to come up with a solution to reduce the number of heavy goods vehicles travelling along the A6068 through Cross Hills and Glusburn.

Officers from both authorities held a summit meeting on the issue last week, which was welcomed by North Yorkshire’s Craven Area Committee on Thursday.

County Coun Philip Barrett (Ind) said he had collected statistics which revealed that in five years the average number of lorries using the A6068 had risen from 665 in 2007 to 855 this year.

“That is a significant rise, especially in an area which is used by lots of pedestrians, and school children from South Craven School, and passes next to Glusburn School. I’m hoping that we now get some positive feedback from the meeting between the two councils.”

County Council Patrick Mulligan (Cons) said he feared any solution could shift the problem to the A59.

“The only solution is to build a bypass,” he said.
