Christmas hampers: The Settle St Vincent De Paul Society is collecting tins of food, pre-owned and new toys and any items which are suitable for distribution in Christmas hampers. The hampers will be distributed to those in need across the north of England. Items for inclusion can be left in the meeting room at the rear of St Mary and St Michael RC Church hall. Santa visits: The Rotary Club of Settle is organising pre-Christmas visits by Father Christmas. He will have a postbox on his sleigh so children can post their letters to Santa. Please be sure to include your name and address so he can reply. Today (Thursday) he will visit Upper Settle and Longdale Avenue and will spend Saturday at Settle Co-op. He goes to Austwick and Clapham on Monday and Rathmell and Wigglesworth on Tuesday, before heading back to Settle to visit Townhead, Church Street, Duke Street and Kings Mill on Wednesday. Next Thursday, December 13, he will be in Langcliffe and on Friday the 14th will be in Giggleswick before spending next Saturday in Booths, Settle. On Monday, December 17, he will visit The Mains and Stackhouse and on Tuesday, December 18, he will be at Horton and Stainforth. Evening visits start at 5.30pm and Saturday visits are from 10am to 4pm.

Christmas lights: Thanks go to everyone who supported the Settle Christmas lights switch on. The window competition, based on the theme of Five Gold Rings, was won by Age UK, with Cottontail Crafts in second place.

Parish church: On Saturday, there will be a community Christmas concert at the church, starting at 6.30pm, featuring Settle Amateur Operatic Society, Langcliffe Singers, Octameron and students from Settle College. Admission is free and a collection will be split between the charities involved. There will also be music by organists Graham Toft and Paul Fisher. Local choir Cantores Salicium will present a festival of nine lessons and carols at the church on Sunday, December 16, at 6.30pm. Andy's great annual quiz is now on sale. Guaranteed to create hours of brain teasing over Christmas, it costs £2.

Settle Voices: On Saturday, Settle Voices will be singing at Settle Station in the morning and at Hellifield Station from noon to 1.30pm. The choir meets on Mondays, from 1pm to 3pm, in the Friends Meeting House, Kirkgate. Victoria Hall: A festive fundraising extravaganza in true music hall style takes place tomorrow (Friday), while on Saturday the hall plays host to Country Legends. Christmas fair: Bentham and District Pet Rescue will hold a Christmas fair at Townhead Court on Saturday, between 10am and 2pm. There will be stalls and competitions, a hamper raffle and seasonal refreshments. Admission is £1 for adults and free for children.

Day for Palestine: On Saturday, there will be a fundraising day for Medical Aid for Palestinians at the Friends Meeting House, Kirkgate, from 10am to 4pm. As well as an exhibition, morning coffee, a soup lunch and afternoon tea will be served and Palestinian produce will be on sale.

Open day: The Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line will hold their Christmas open day at Settle station on Saturday, from 10am to 4pm. Sherry, mince pies, cakes and soft drinks will be available. The station shop will be open for Christmas cards and gifts. Settle Voices and the Opera North Horn Club will entertain during the day.

Operatic coffee: Settle Amateur Operatic Society invites you to the Old Court House, on Station Road, on Saturday between 10am and 12.30pm for a Christmas coffee morning. There will be coffee and mince pies along with home-made cakes, a tombola and charity stall.

Poppies concert: Poppies Tearooms is the venue for a return visit from folk group Moonbeams on Saturday at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £7 from the tearoom.

Soul in the Dales: A soul night to raise funds to fight prostate cancer is being held at Settle Social Club on Saturday, from 9pm.

The Folly: On Tuesday, there will be a Yuletide event between 10am and noon. Drop in for mulled wine and mince pies and a last chance to see the 2012 exhibitions. Admission is free and refreshments are £3.50.

Langcliffe Singers: Langcliffe Singers will perform a concert of French music entitled Fete des Lumieres (Festival of Lights) at Settle Parish Church at 7.30pm next Saturday, December 15. Tickets cost £10 from Cave and Crag in Settle, Bentham Post Office, choir members or at the door.

Dales theatre: Theatre of the Dales will be visiting Settle on Thursday, December 20, with its Three Cheers For Christmas production. The show brings together three stories – Mak the Sheepstealer, children’s opera Amahl and the Night Visitors and Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Christmas Day lunch: A Christmas Day lunch will be served at Townhead Court. There will be a full Christmas dinner with all the trimmings and a light tea will also be served. The cost is £10 and the event is open to all ages. Volunteers are needed to help with transport.
