Embsay’s Alice Halstead triumphed at the JustGiving Awards 2013.

She took top honours in the outstanding commitment to fundraising category for her efforts over the past four years.

Diagnosed with a rare form of diabetes in 2006, 22-year-old Alice impressed the judges with her tireless commitment to raising money for the Rays of Sunshine children’s charity, which had previously granted her wish to visit a West End show.

It came after Alice was admitted to hospital because of extreme fluctuations in her blood sugar levels – and a two-week stay turned into more than three years before her condition was stabilised.

Since then, Alice has raised around £50,000 for Rays of Sunshine, visiting schools and lobbying Rotary Clubs and local businesses for funds.

She also represents the charity as a special ambassador, supporting other people’s wishes and telling her story.

At the awards, Alice said: “I’d like to say thanks to Rays of Sunshine for all their support. I know how important fundraising is to charities and I will continue to fight my condition and help make a difference to other people living with diabetes – it really matters.”

Now in their fourth year, the JustGiving Awards were held at the Troxy, London, on Thursday night.

Anne-Marie Huby, managing director of JustGiving, said: “Each year we are overwhelmed by the inspiring fundraising stories we hear, and the truly incredible lengths to which people like Alice will go for the causes they care about.”
