Organisers of Cononley Gala are on cloud nine after an aerobatics display helped make the event a soaraway success.

World-famous flying team The Blades, whose pilots are all ex-members of the legendary Red Arrows, performed over the gala field.

“A lot of people came along to see that and they weren’t disappointed – it was fantastic,” said James Moorehouse, a member of the gala’s organising committee and next year’s chairman.

“But there were a whole lot of things going on and the field was absolutely heaving.

“The weather was a real bonus. It rained quite heavily on and off during the morning while we were setting up, but then it cleared up for the afternoon.”

The gala began with a procession around the village, with the number of floats up on previous years.

This year’s theme was musicals and those taking part included Cowling Hall B&B, the village school, nursery, Jacquelines hairdresser, the U9s football team and Cononley Singers.

The crowning of the gala queen, Poppy Wilson, then took place.

Attractions during the afternoon included a dog show organised by Ashlands Vets, children’s sports races and egg throwing, a pub tug-of-war and a new junior tug-of-war, fell races, country dancing by the children of Cononley Primary School and live performances by DalesJam and Cononley Singers. There was also a sumo wrestling ring and pillow fight.

And in the evening a party in the park featured live music by local band The Rhythm Junkies, a disco, hog roast and bar. Proceeds from the gala will go towards the upkeep of the playing field.
