This year’s Proms on the Farm – the tenth to be held – has been hailed as the best ever after it attracted around 800 people to a Silsden hillside.

Good weather drew around 200 extra people on the day to join the 600 who had bought tickets in advance.

And £12,000 was raised, which will be split between Silsden Methodist Church and Manorlands hospice.

The revellers waved flags, held candles and sang along to anthems like Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem.

Rosalie Holroyd, one of the organisers, said: “It was definitely the best we’ve ever had. People were sitting in the gazebos with candelabras and food.”

Rosalie said there were many groups in fancy dress, including pirates, hippies, St Trinians and soldiers from TV sitcom It Ain’t Half Hot Mum.

The winning group had donned French costume under the theme “Silsden Welcomes the Tour de France”.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Coun Khadim Hussain, opened the Proms and entertainment was provided by country and folk band Five and Dimers, the Skelmanthorpe Brass Band with soloist Sarah Halsstead and For One Night Only, made up of experienced local musicians who come together each year especially for the event.

Rosalie said the atmosphere was “electric”.

She added: “One couple on holiday from Canada couldn’t believe that the village could come to life like this.

“They were in awe and their little boy was waving a flag.”

The giant raffle raised more than £1,000 and the auction – conducted by Matthew Binns, of David Hill’s – also raised a record amount.

The date for next year's Proms has been fixed for July 19.
