A 40-year-old driver who lost control of her car on a bend near Blubberhouses was almost three times over the limit, Skipton magistrates heard.

Rachel Hewitt lost control of her Honda HRV on a bend at Shepherd Hill at 1.15pm on July 8 and hit a drystone wall before rolling back onto Askwith Moor Road, the court was told.

A routine breath test taken by a police officer attending the collision proved positive and she was taken to the police station where she was found to have 103 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Hewitt, who admitted drink driving, told the officer at the time she had been drinking after having a bad day at work.

The court heard that Hewitt, of Weston Road, Ilkley, had been through a difficult marriage, had suffered from low esteem and as a result had turned to binge drinking.

In mitigation, John Mewies said she was extremely sorry for what she had done and had taken robust steps to sort herself out. She now had a job in Harrogate, for which she would have to catch a train to Leeds before changing to get to Harrogate.

Magistrates banned Hewitt for 25 months and handed her a 12-month community order with supervision. She was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a victims surcharge of £60. If she completes a drink drivers rehabilitation course by December, 2014, her ban will be reduced by a quarter or 190 days.
