After three years of inclement growing weather, this year’s show saw a marked improvement for exhibitors to Austwick’s annual flower and handicraft show.

Friday’s downpour damaged several flower exhibits, but residents rose to the challenge and entries were made in almost all classes. It was particularly encouraging to see new exhibitors and new faces winning trophies.

The quality of the produce was extremely high and judges were impressed with the standard of the exhibits.

The best in show trophy was awarded to Pam Smith for her felt work and there were three trophies for Bill Procter – the Preston Cup for most points in the vegetable section, the Fred Price Memorial Trophy for the best potato and Foster Beaver Challenge Cup for most points in the combined produce sections.

Other trophy winners were: Winifred Mattinson Cup for most points in the flower section – Frances Southworth; Ulrich Kube Memorial Cup for four roses : Sue Brown; Chapman Trophy for the most points in the artistic flower section – Carol Wilkinson; Byles Challenge Cup for the best bowl of roses – Kathryn Huck; Richard Wallbank Trophy for best pot plant – Catherine Vaughan-Williams; Glyn Jones Challenge Cup for the most points in handicrafts – Karol-Ann Hewgill; Metcalfe Cup for the best photograph – Joan Butler; Malcolm Bowker Trophy for photography (set subject) – Judy Leeming; Brook Cup for most points in the cookery section – Janet Huck; Brook Poultry Cup for the best egg – Jackie Smith; Jean Dodgson Award for best handicraft – Pam Smith; Nellie Price Memorial Cup for the most points in the children's section – Jack Hewgill.
