A verdict of accidental death has been recorded on a Glusburn woman who died two years ago while in Ireland for a wedding.

Marie Horne, 64, suffered head injuries after falling off a bike and died two days later in Kerry General Hospital, on June 20, 2011, an inquest in Skipton heard.

Mrs Horne had been staying in Tralee and had gone out on a bike ride with her son, Stephen, and his girlfriend to see a house she was considering buying, the inquest heard.

She had parted from the other two, with the intention of returning to the house, when she had fallen.

In a statement read out at the inquest, her son described how he had come across his mother who was being tended by paramedics a short distance from where they had parted.

She had been taken to hospital but her severe head injuries had proved inoperable and she had died two days later.

Coroner Rob Turnbull, who concluded Mrs Horne had died as a result of an accident, said it was not clear why she had fallen from her bike, but a witness had reported seeing one of her legs caught in a wheel.

There was also no evidence of any other vehicles being involved, there were no faults on the bike, a lady’s Pioneer Spirit and the road was free of potholes.

An inquest into Mrs Horne’s death has already been held in Ireland.
