Senior citizens outing: It has been causing a chuckle for some years when Barnoldswick and Earby Rotary Club holds its annual outing for a party of senior citizens that many of its drivers would qualify by age themselves to be treated to such a trip. Granted, this year’s event included some passengers aged 90- plus, but some of the club’s volunteer drivers are into their 80s. A minibus driven by Rotarian Eric Driver and seven cars took 27 pensioners on a tour of Pendleside villages, with the weather showing off the scenery at its best. The destination was Holden Clough Garden Nursery, near Bolton-by-Bowland, where the party enjoyed afternoon tea before drivers the returned their charges home.

Rotary club: Unique and multi-faceted – that’s Rotary, said district governor Kevin Walsh when he visited Barnoldswick and Earby Rotarians’ weekly meeting. Most clubs had a wide range of experience which could be used in communities. “We are for communities, locally and internationally,” he said. In a question and answer session, he covered education, the campaign to end polio worldwide by 2018 (the Rotary Foundation charity) and suggested mapping the location of defibrillators in cases of heart attacks. He also asked how Rotary could sell itself to the public and urged the club to identify what its legacy would be down the line.
