Festival: Bentham Food and Beer Festival, which has been organised by the Bentham Environmentally Sustainable Town and We Are Bentham groups, runs until Monday. There is local beer, cheese and music on offer and a food quiz is available in the shops. Tomorrow (Friday), between 10am and 1pm, there will be a “Ploughman’s lunch from scratch” – a workshop on how to make bread, cheese, butter and pickle – at the Looking Well, on King Street. It costs £5 including lunch. On Saturday in Main Street, High Bentham, there will be a crop swap stall, where you can bring your own surplus produce and take away someone else’s. Other attractions include stalls selling local produce, a Bentham Bee stall plus cheese-tasting. There will be a bus travelling around the various hostelries in Low and High Bentham on Saturday lunchtime and afternoon. On Sunday there will be a duck race, starting at 2pm on the River Wenning. Ducks are available at shops in the town centre. On Monday, the Black Bull Hotel will be holding a fun day to mark the end of the festival. It starts at noon and there will be a barbecue. The Bull will be welcoming the Thwaites shire horses and there will be live music from 2pm, a bouncy castle and face painting.

Age Concern: Members of Age Concern met at the Masonic Hall on Friday, where they enjoyed a lunch of sausage and mash. The servers were Faith Wilson and Sue Pilkington. The raffle winner was Margaret Rowcroft. In the afternoon, Janet Kenyon gave a talk on Age Concern in Zimbabwe. The day concluded with tea and biscuits.

Springfield Bowling Club: On August 12, the A team were away at Ingleton and lost seven games to one. The B team were at home to Staveley A and drew four games each. The following day, the club had a friendly at Hawkshead and lost six games to two. Saturday was President’s Day and a new competition, the Jubilee Cup, was launched to celebrate 60 years of bowling at the club. The president, Eunice Garlick, presented the prizes to Cliff Fisher and Tom Davies who beat Andrew Cross and Clifford Park 21-14 in the final.

Low Bentham WI: As the monthly meeting held in the Victoria Institute, the group was given a talk by past member Joan Gilroy about her trip around the world 30 years ago. Joan enjoyed first class travel on a pre-arranged tour, taking in such places as San Francisco, Auckland, Sydney, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Coffee mornings: The Lancaster and Skipton Rail User Group (LASRUG) wishes to thank people for their support at the recent coffee morning. Another coffee morning held by the NSPCC raised £500, and another by the local MS society raised £330.

Bentham Show: Remember to get your entries in for Bentham Show, which will take place at the auction mart on Saturday, September 7.

Fundraiser: There will be a coffee morning on Saturday to raise funds for Settle and District Blind Association. It will take place in Bentham Town Hall at 10am.

Street fair: Monday is Low Bentham street fair day, with plenty of bargains on offer. The event starts at 10am.
