Greatwood School threw open its doors to past pupils and staff as part of its 60th anniversary celebrations.

More than 30 people attended last Wednesday’s open day and among the visitors were three of the very first pupils.

Malcolm Barnwell, John Walls and his sister, Eunice (now Mrs Tyson) were at the Skipton school when it opened its doors on August 24, 1953.

In fact, it was Eunice who presented a posy of flowers to Alderman WM Hyman, chairman of the Education Committee.

“The visitors enjoyed looking at old pictures and seeing how the school had changed,” said teaching assistant Sue Smith. “Many said today’s children had much more fun than they had.”

Each year group researched a decade of the school’s history and performed songs and poems.

  • The Craven Herald will be looking back at the school’s history in a future edition of the paper.
