The driver of an Audi A4 caught speeding on the Settle bypass was trying to get away from the Porsche behind him, Skipton magistrates heard.
Ryan Keltie, 33, admitted in a letter to the court doing 87mph on the 60mph A65, but explained he was being followed very closely by a Porsche.
He said he had moved out to pass a slow moving vehicle and had sped up to get out of the way of the sports car.
Keltie, of Tiree Grange, Hamilton, added his apologies and said that it had been an error of judgement.
Magistrates, who were told he already had three points on his licence from March last year for using his phone while driving, fined him £397 and endorsed his licence with four penalty points. He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a victims surcharge of £40.
