Parish council: Horton parish councillors held an additional meeting to consider two planning applications in connection with the provision of a railhead at Arcow quarry. A good number of residents were present as well as representatives of Lafarge/Tarmac, the quarry operators. Among the issues raised were: the risk the proposed railhead would be used to bring material into the quarries, the number of road wagon movements, the generation of dust, the impact on the restoration plan for Arcow quarry and certain drainage culverts, the creation of passing places on the unadopted road leading to Arcow quarry and the Foredale community, and the problem of wagons turning right from the minor road on to Austwick road. Councillors said there two important considerations – the impact of the proposals on residents and on the environment. On balance, the council said the impact in both considerations would not be so extreme as to merit outright objection. However, there was a need for enforceable conditions in any approval. The council resolved to recommend both applications be granted, with conditions, by the national park planning committee. The next meeting of the council is on Monday at 7.30pm in the village hall.
