St Oswald’s: There is a busy month ahead at St Oswald’s Church. There will be a 9am service on the first Sunday of Lent, March 9, and a morning service at 10.30am on Sunday, March 23. Earby Brass Band will hold a concert in church on Friday, March 28, starting at 7.30pm. Refreshments will be available and admission will be £6. The following day the church will be open from 10am. There will be a variety of stalls and refreshments. Mothering Sunday, March 30, will be a day of special celebration. There will be a 3pm service which will include the dedication of two new church bells.

Show AGM: Members of Horton-in-Ribblesdale show committee held their annual general meeting recently. Officers elected were: chairman, Gary Middleton; vice- chairman, Barrie Thomas; indoor chairman, Diane Wood; secretary, Paula Swainson; assistant secretary, John Swainson; treasurer, Peter Shackleton. The treasurer was pleased to report a small profit on the 2013 show and it was agreed to look into a marquee replacement of a better quality. It was also decided to purchase a flat trailer to store and transport the sheep hurdles. It was agreed that the collaboration with the Friends of Horton School providing catering on the field had worked very well and their donation to show funds was acknowledged. The same arrangements will be put in place this year. Indoor classes and outdoor classes will remain the same as the previous year. The Sargison cup will be awarded to the class for afternoon tea for two presented on a two-tier stand.

Gun Club: Members of Penyghent Gun Club held a shoot in Horton Quarry by kind permission of Hansons. The marshals were R Carr and K Humphrey. S Bamber was the winner of the competition for the Tower Bird Cup with 19 kills, second was R Carr with 18 kills and third was E Sharpe with 16 kills. A ten bird pool shoot was held which was won by P Fox with nine kills. The next members’ shoot will be at High Birkwith Farm on March 16 at 1pm.
