A GRANDFATHER who started out as an apprentice electrician has been made a canon to mark his 20 years of dedication to the Bradford Diocese.

Sutton vicar Michael Cowgill was "amazed" to receive a letter from the Bishop of Bradford, the Right Reverend David James, asking whether he wished to accept the title.

"I feel very proud. It was very unexpected. And it is affirming for everybody here at the church," said Canon Cowgill.

The honour comes as the father-of-two and grandfather-of-seven marks his 10th year at St Thomas' Church, Sutton. Altogether, he has served in the Bradford Diocese for 20 years.

He also received the recognition for his work with Bradford's link diocese in Sudan. He has twice visited northern Sudan, in 1993 and on sabbatical in 1999.

Mr Cowgill was installed as a canon at Bradford Cathedral on Sunday, watched by his wife, Ann, and his former vicar, John Long.

There are currently 16 canons in the Bradford Diocese and each is allocated their own seat in the cathedral. Mr Cowgill's is situated in King Edward's stall.

Originally from Earby, he will soon get to know parishioners in Lothersdale and Cowling as his patch is being extended to take in the two villages. He has no plans to move from Sutton, however.

"A lot of effort is put into the village by residents to make it a good community," he explained. "People are keen to work for the village and say we are proud of our village'."
