I Believe In Unicorns at Grassington Festival

I Believe In Unicorns is a show that has been described as being 'Breathtakingly beautiful and utterly charming.. a must see'. So when the show came to Grassington Festival last weekend, 6-year old Beatrice and her mum, Victoria went along to see what all the fuss is about. Here's what they thought....

Review of ‘I Believe in Unicorns’ by Beatrice Benn – Age 6

It was really good because the story was brilliant. I liked the way she told the story. My favourite bit was the books going smaller and smaller and smaller like Russian Dolls. I liked it when she asked the children for the details for the story she made up, which I really loved because it was funny. I liked it when she opened the books and the houses came out. I liked it because the houses lit up. When the buildings went on fire it looked like real fiery flames. I liked it when the books were burning too. All these things made the play perfect and magical. I liked the beautiful unicorn and the story of the unicorn too.

Review of ‘I Believe in Unicorns’ by Victoria Benn (Age 44!)

‘I Believe in Unicorns’ was full of wonder and surprises for my six year old daughter, as it was for me, however it was more than that for me – it was Morpurgo at his best - enchanting, enthralling and incredibly emotive.

Danyah Miller’s flawless performance saw her weaving ‘stories within stories’ with graceful fluidity and charm. Her fantastic story telling skills and the wonderful and cleverly designed set and props, enabled us all to join her on a magical journey into the world of books and war torn Europe.

The play was long enough to leave you moved and delighted, but short enough to ensure little ones could retain their engagement.

Wizard Productions and Danyah Miller have made one of Morpurgo’s many wonderful stories into a unique and wonderful theatrical experience, with the central image of the book being used not only as the theatrical vehicle, but as the motif, story and set - to cleverly and beautifully reinforce its eternally important message.

There's lots more still to come at Grassington Festival!
