AN Embsay mother of two teenage boys is rowing a million metres to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Jo Moseley, 49, started her challenge in May, on the anniversary of her parents' wedding anniversary, and aims to finish it in December, a year after her mother died from cancer.

And she has set herself a target of raising £4,219.50 - because a rowing marathon is 42,195 metres.

"Both my parents have had cancer over the years, my dad had cancer of the breast, bowel and skin, and my mum had lymphoma in 2012 and died last December," she said.

"The wonderful Macmillan nurses helped them through the years and this is my way of thanking the charity for its support and care."

Jo is doing all her rowing on the indoor Concept 2 machines at Craven Fitness Centre, Skipton, and has so far clocked up 256,000 metres, around a quarter of the way to her target.

"I try to do two to three half marathons a month, generally on Fridays, so I can sleep in on a Saturday, and I plan to finish on December 21 with a marathon, of 42,195 metres," she said.

Jo only started using the indoor rower a year ago when she joined the gym as a way of relieving stress and helping her to sleep.

And now, through social networking site, Twitter, she has found a lot of fellow rowers encouraging her towards her goal and is doing a blog charting her progress.

She is also designing T-shirts which she aims to sell.

"I would also be so grateful to any support and sponsorship, and I shall be sure to give everyone a bit thankyou," she said.
