A CHURCH in Skipton has raised £1,000 for local food banks from donations it received for providing refreshments during the Tour de France.

St Andrew’s (Methodist & United Reformed) Church in Newmarket Street served its first bacon butty at 6.45am and this was quickly followed by over 100 more as visitors to Skipton and le Grand Depart 2014 satisfied their hunger. Church members also served croissants and coffee throughout the morning.

The church hall had been laid out with belisha beacons, roads and small bikes for children to get in to the spirit of the race. In addition large screens in the church gave up to date TV coverage and provided a relaxing place to catch up on the latest from the race.

After the race had passed members of the church gave away drinks and buns on the lawn in front of the church to many grateful visitors. Their donations helped the church to raise £1,000 that will be donated to local food banks.
