RESPONDING to the impact of the Tour de France's passage through the district cost Airedale Hospital about £40,000.

Addressing fellow board members at an Airedale NHS Foundation Trust board meeting, director of operations Stacey Hunter said this sum had been required to pay for the hospital's contingency measures.

She explained Airedale had needed to ensure it had enough staff in place to deal with any major surge in demand.

She added that while the weekend of July 5 and 6 had been busy, she noted that this one-off event had been extremely well handled.

Non-executive director Anne Gregory said: "It was a good story of disparate organisations coming together to make something work."

She also asked whether Airedale had received any external contingency funding for the Tour. Ms Hunter replied: "Not as yet, we're involved in ongoing dialogue with NHS England about that."
