THE Friends of Aireville Park, Skipton, are enjoying a taste of success.

Using cash from RHS Kärcher community fund, they have created a community herb bed, inspired by the Incredible Edible project in Todmorden.

The raised wooden bed was built with the help of Stepping Stones Nursery, based on the edge of the park, and North Yorkshire's Community Payback project.

Sited close to the children's play area, the planter is stocked with fresh leaves, but the herbs and salads available will change over the seasons.

And, to celebrate the initiative, some of the produce was served up at a special Picnic in the Park on Saturday.

Friends volunteer Sarah Copeland said: "The picnic was a real success. We caught a beautiful early autumn day and while the sun was out it was lovely and warm. The salad crops have been growing well in the warmth of the last month.

"The children helped harvest and wash the salad leaves and everyone ate them. If you would like to do the same, please help yourself. We also have some delicious Bright Lights swiss chard ready for picking."

The Friends comprise volunteers who regularly meet to find ways to improve the park and anyone interested in getting involved should email friendsofairevillepark@gmail.com
