YEAR six pupils from four schools enjoyed a STEM day run by the Smallpeice Trust at Giggleswick School.

Pupils from Giggleswick Junior School, Austwick Primary, Ghyll Royd School and Malsis School worked in small groups on a wind turbine design-and-make project.

There were three main elements to the project: construction of a circuit to convert the turbine rotation to electricity, turbine blade design and construction to maximise output and design; and construction of a tower structure to carry the turbine.

The turbines were tested and judged by the Smallpeice Trust event organiser and the overall prize went to Austwick Primary School.

“The aim of the day is to enable pupils to enhance their understanding of, and aptitude for, problem solving, creativity, design, and engineering”, said Giggleswick’s head of design James Huxtable. “The children did remarkably well; they were fully engaged with the project and produced some really excellent work."
