INGLEBOROUGH Scout District held its annual night hike and, to mark the 100th anniversary of World War One, it had the military theme of Over the Top.

Starting and finishing at Eldroth Village Hall, the route covered four-and-a-half miles of lanes, fields and footpaths.

Ten teams left the base at staggered intervals, walking both in clockwise and anticlockwise directions around a set route. As each team set off, the Scouts received a King’s Shilling for signing up and on their return each was presented with a certificate of gallantry.

Although the hike is not a competition, it is a demanding challenge requiring good navigation skills, teamwork and determination.

In keeping with the battlefield theme, tasks included transmitting a Morse code message using a torch, shooting a stomp rocket, getting the team silently under a wire without tipping off the enemy and administering first aid to a bomb-blasted fellow infantryman.

Finally, with face paint and natural materials collected en route, the teams had to camouflage themselves to get back to base without being spotted.

The event culminated in a supper of trench broth, bread rations and food-parcel cake prior to an overnight camp in an adjacent paddock.
