TALES of Old Gargrave will be revealed at a Gargrave Heritage Group exhibition, which opens on Saturday.

And among the stories on show will be one relating to Fanny McQueenie, who is the woman on the picture.

The McQueenie family lived on River Place in a house now owned by heritage group member Ray Jones.

He remembered that two of the McQueenie children had drowned in the river at about the time of the photograph, around 1912. This prompted him and fellow member Don Slaven to do some digging.

A search of the Craven Herald archives revealed Herbert McQueenie had, indeed, drowned on December 29, 1911, after falling into the river - and the inquest report stated the dead boy's brother had died in the river a "few years before" but his body had never been found.

Ray and Don have been unable to find any further information and they would like to hear from anyone who can solve the riddle.

Their research did, however, find a coroner's record, which showed a cousin, John McQueenie, had "drowned" on February 26, 1910, aged 14 months. But it was subsequently decided that John, who weighed just 13-and-a half pounds, had died from natural causes.

Tales of Old Gargrave will be staged at St Andrew's Church, Gargrave, for eight days from Saturday. It will be open daily from 10am to 4pm.
