YORKSHIRE poet Ian McMillan has marked the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War by teaming up with award-winning documentary photographer Ian Beesley to create a new show, Magic Lantern Tales.
And, as part of the Rural Arts on Tour scheme, the show will be staged at Settle’s Victoria Hall tomorrow.
Ian McMillan - described by poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy as one of today’s greatest poetry performers - will tell the stories of men who fought in the First World War and lived to tell the tale, while a real “magic lantern”, one of the very first types of projector, will provide stunning, atmospheric accompanying images.
The piece reminds an audience that although often seen in great sweeps, war is “people against people” and every person has a story to tell.
“The past and the present come together in pictures and poems that take the audience back,” said Mr McMillan. “The room will be dark but the pictures and the poems will light up the spirit!”
The show starts at 8pm and tickets costing £12 are available from 01729 825718.
