A DRIVER collided with two other cars after swerving to avoid a rabbit, Skipton magistrates heard.

Faisal Mahmood was taken to hospital, along with three others, following the incident on the A56 near Thornton-in-Craven on July 20, the court heard on Friday.

Mahmood, driving a VW Golf, had been on his way home to Barnoldswick at 4pm after a shopping trip to Bradford just before the Islamic festival of Eid with his family.

He had swerved to avoid a rabbit, collided with a car coming the other way, spun in the road and hit a second car.

The two people in the first car had been temporarily trapped, while three in the second car had been injured. Mahmood, of Rook Street, Barnoldswick, who admitted careless driving, was of previous good character with a full, clean driving licence. A self employed tiler and plasterer, he was full of remorse and had pleaded guilty at the first opportunity.

His licence was endorsed with six penalty points and he was fined £185, with costs of £85 and a victims surcharge of £25.
