THE sight of rugby players getting in the pink for charity has spread across the Channel.

One week after Wharfedale's players took to the field in pink socks to raise money for the children’s cancer charity Candlelighters, the French village club Monein joined in.

Monein is situated in south-west France, close to the Pyrenees.

It is the home of former Wharfedale player Allan Bell, who is godfather to Tom Slater, the Wharfedale under-tens player who is recuperating from treatment for cancer of the liver.

When his club learned of Tom’s bravery they arranged for their two teams to wear the pink socks last Saturday, and raised 1,000 euros for the charity.

The collection was organised by Allan's daughters Lois and Mica.

Pictured are the Monein First XV in their pink socks, and a group of Monein supporters in Wharfedale berets as they attended a Wharfedale home match last season; Allan Bell is seen second from the left.
