CRAVEN schools came away with three awards at the Rotary Technology Tournament held in Skipton Town Hall on Tuesday.

More than 70 youngsters took part in the competition, in which they worked against the clock to build a motor-powered vehicle which could travel down a two-metre simulated pipe.

Skipton Girls' High School beat off stiff competition to take the design prize, while teams from Ermysted's and Giggleswick each claimed a technology award.

Chief judge, Mark Andrew, chief executive of NG Bailey, said: "The highlight of the day was the testing session when we could all see how well the designs worked. The level of ingenuity and flair these young people demonstrated was truly impressive."

David Mitton, from Skipton-Craven Rotary Club, which co-ordinated the tournament, said: "We've had very positive feedback, both from the young people taking part and their teachers."

Luke Shepherd, from the winning Ermysted's team added: "We've learnt a lot from the experience. The atmosphere is great, the task was a challenge and it's really good to be able to see a project through in one day."
