HUNDREDS of plants were bedded out in Barnoldswick’s Memorial Gardens as more than 30 people took part in April’s community action day.

The town’s bloom team spent a long day working in the gardens as part of the community initiative which also included volunteer litter picking teams working around the town.

The mass planting day saw almost all the plants in the new perennial beds being put in place by bloom volunteers in the culmination of the six-month planting project.

Groups of enthusiastic youngsters joined regular bloom volunteers in watering the newly bedded out plants.

The work is being carried out by Barnoldswick in Bloom in readiness for the commemoration of the end of the Second World War in September.

Large new beds have been created in the gardens as part of a major refurbishment of the area.

Barnoldswick is one of seven national finalists in its category in the national Britain in Bloom event this year.

The civic pride initiative has seen an explosion of involvement this year, with hundreds of people taking part in litter picks and gardening activities.

“We’re determined that Barnoldswick will be seen in the best possible light by the national judges when they visit in August,” said Barnoldswick in Bloom chairman, Marjorie Adams. “The whole town is a hive of activity with lots of different projects.”

The next Barnoldswick in Bloom community action event is planned to coincide with the Valley Gardens’ Spring Fair on Saturday, May 16.
