A LANDOWNER has appealed against enforcement action taken after he built a barn without planning permission.

Craven District Council refused retrospective planning permission for the replacement New Laithe Barn in Bank Newton in July and started enforcement action.

In its decision notice, the council said permission was refused because the building was in an inappropriate location, given its isolation from other buildings forming Newton Grange.

Its design was also considered out of place with modern farming practices.

Enforcement has now been suspended, following an appeal to the Planning Inspectorate by landowner John Howard.

Mr Howard's agent, in his submissions to the inspectorate, says the barn replaces one that had been on the same site for many years and has been traditionally constructed using traditional materials and building methods.

He also argues it is now a firm feature in the landscape and does not detract from it.

The appeal will be dealt with by written representations.
