A MAJOR haul of silverware was wending its way to the home of the Thomas family on Saturday evening after a successful trio of wins at the annual

show at Horton-in-Ribblesdale.

Vice-chairman Barrie Thomas won five trophies with his Swaledale sheep, daughter Zoe won the trophy for the most points in the indoor section,

eleven years and under, and Zoe's mum Tina won the Sargison trophy awarded for the best cheese and onion pie.

There was an encouraging increase in entries in the Dalesbred section, giving judge Robert Tiplady, from West Burton, a difficult task. His award

for the champion Dalesbred sheep went to Littondale farmers David and Charlotte Charnley, who were assisted by their young son Jonty who kept

the other entrants amused, particularly when checking the under bellies of the sheep his dad was showing!

They also won the trophies for the best male and best female in the section.

The Jackson family, who provided both the showfield and the car parking field, were awarded the trophy for the best Dalesbred group. David Lambert, from Hawes, had the best fleeced sheep in the section.

The Texel section again saw an increase in entries and the champion award went to Richard Sunter, of Harber Farm, with his suckled ewe. Richard runs a small flock of sheep alongside his Horton-in-Ribblesdale haulage business.

Young exhibitors were again to the fore in the Leicester and Zwartble sheep sections. James Millman had the champion Blue-faced Leicester with

an aged ram and 21-year-old Jessica Lambert, of Selside Farm, had the champion Zwartble. James Caton had the best five Mule gimmer lambs and it was one of these which won the overall supreme champion award.

The indoor section put many of the larger shows to shame. The supreme baker with the best exhibit out of 190 entries in the confectionery section was Jennifer Campbell whose chocolate cake would have put her into the next round of the Great British Bake Off!

A poor summer depleted the vegetable entries slightly but again the quantity and quality were far superior to those of their larger show counterparts in the area.

A new trophy was awarded this year - the Bainbridge family, formerly of Horton-in-Ribblesdale, presented the Dennis Bainbridge salver for the best vegetable (this was also accompanied by a Lay of the Land voucher given by the gardening business in Settle). The recipient was Matthew Lambert with his six perfect pods of peas. Matthew has a large vegetable plot at his Selside home and gained valuable work experience recently at Growing with Grace at Clapham.

The flower section provided colour and a taste of what even a poor summer can provide but it was the very tiniest of blooms which won the best entry in the section with Diane Armstrong's miniature garden entry.

Hard-working show secretary Paula Swainson won the trophy for the best item of needlework with her beautiful patchwork quilt and Linn Booth won

the trophy for the best exhibit in the handicraft section with her sketch of a Friesian cow.

A good crowd enjoyed the sights and sounds of the small traditional show and it was such a bonus for both the visitors and the organisers when the sun shone and the day was warm.

Former Brackenbotton farmer Harry Alderson was paying a visit from Skipton, the first for a good number of years, and Pat Elliot was also taking a trip down memory lane. Pat, formerly Pat Thompson of Selside Railway Cottages and now living in the North East, was visiting relatives in the village and recalled her last visit to the show was probably around 60 years ago. She thought it was a wonderful day.

Homemade refreshments were provided by the Friends of Horton-in-Ribblesdale School and the trophies were presented by Horton-in-Ribblesdale Gala Princess Katie Gudgeon.
