CONTROVERSIAL changes to a Skipton flats scheme that it was feared could pose a safety risk to the school next door will be decided by a government planning inspector.

Amendments to the approved plans, including the repositioning of windows and external walkway at Craven Buildings, next to Christ Church Primary School, were refused under delegated powers by Craven District Council in July.

The local authority said the changes to the four two-bedroom apartments would "result in an unacceptable relationship with the school building and playground" and an "unacceptable loss of privacy to the school".

School governors and the Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales also objected to the changes, which they feared could pose a safety risk to the school.

Builders Dalesview Developments has responded to objections by saying it has constructed the apartments in line with the approved plans, apart from some minor alterations, which it claims it carried out with guidance from the planning department.

An appeal against the council's refusal was lodged with the Planning Inspectorate and will be determined following written representations by the council, Dalesview and interested parties.
