ONLY one flood alert remains after yesterday’s heavy rain brought flood chaos to Craven.

The alert relates to the Upper Aire catchment area.

However, the Environment Agency says the while the washlands at Skipton and Cononley are full, river levels are now dropping.

Yesterday afternoon, flood warnings were issued for the River Aire at Gargave, Eastburn Beck at Sutton-in-Craven, Silsden Beck and Earby Beck.

Many homes were flooded.

At Ash Grove and Holme Lane in Sutton-in-Craven, anxious residents used sandbags to protect their homes.

"Only our garage and garden were flooded – thank goodness," said one householder, Mandy Sunderland.

"This was mostly due to the efforts of the fire brigade in bringing sandbags and all the neighbours working together."

In the St John's Street area of Silsden, some cellars have been flooded and residents used sandbags there to try to protect their homes.

Craven ward district councillor Adrian Naylor, who is also on Silsden Town Council, visited the scene and was swamped by people anxious about the situation.

"Water was lapping up to their homes and at least two people had flooding in their cellars," he said.

"We have got an unfinished, half-built flood barrier at Silsden Beck, which Bradford Council placed an enforcement notice on earlier this year.

"Water was being pushed through a wall which would have formed part of that flood defence barrier.

"We've also had water pouring down from the park."

Train services on the Airedale line were badly affected by flooding at Cononley.

Some trains were cancelled and others, from Bradford and Leeds, terminated at Keighley.

There were also problems on trains between Skipton and Carlisle because of flooding near Settle and Gargrave and services are still running about 20 minutes late.

Bus services were also hit.  Transdev re-routed its 66 bus service to avoid the floods in Sutton and suspended its 25 service because of flooding at Cowling and over the Moss.

Floods also closed the A65 at Gargrave.
