A BARNOLDSWICK battle re-enactor completed a gruelling walk in armour to raise money for charity.

Wesley Perriman, vice-chairman of the Red Wyvern Society, completed the three-day walk from Skipton Castle to the Yorkshire village of Towton to raise £366 for the Battlefield Trust.

Wesley, 33, completed the 45-mile journey wearing the same uniform as soldiers from the Battle of Towton would have worn more than 500 years ago.

The Battle of Towton was fought on March 29, 1461, during the English Wars of the Roses. It is known as being one of the largest battles to take place in England.

Wesley wore wool and linen clothing, leather lace boots and a piece or armour known as a padded jack. He also carried a battle standard bearing the livery of the Red Wyvern Society.

"I felt like I aged a year for every mile I walked," said Wesley. "It was very hard and the flag I was carrying was very heavy."

His colleague, James Hodgson, of Preston, accompanied Wesley on the walk wearing a heavy suit of brigandine armour.

"We were recreating what it would have been like for a soldier to walk to the battlefield," added Wesley. "What better way to celebrate the 555th anniversary of the battle."
