BERYL Rothera had a pleasant surprise when an old Craven Herald photograph of staff posing outside Settle Post Office in the 1930s was pointed out to her.
There was her late father Matthew Airey, a First World War veteran, who lived in Settle with his wife, Victoria, and worked for the Post Office for 33 years.
When he retired in 1953, he was presented with a long service medal, which he treasured, said Beryl, who lives in Sandbeds, Keighley.
She added: "I felt a lot for my father. He was wounded three times in the First World War but never said a thing about it.
"His arm was so badly injured he couldn't move it – he needed to lift it with his left hand and the wound was very disfigured. He never told anyone he was disabled and claimed nothing from the state."
Her father was a soldier with the King's Liverpool Regiment and, when he was discharged, he received an illustrated certificate, as well as his medals. He died in 1973, aged 78.
