FORMER Ermysted's Grammar School pupil Fred Wrathall went to Buckingham Palace to receive his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Fred, from Moor Laithe Farm in Gisburn, did A-levels at the Skipton school after taking GCSEs at Bowland High School.

He is now in his first year of studying mechanical engineering at Liverpool University.

"It was a fantastic day," said Fred, who completed his award while in his last year at Ermysted's.

He was accompanied to London by his mother, Trudi, and Gordon Fothergill, the school's DoE award co-ordinator.

In order to achieve the award, Fred was a voluntary young leader at Gisburn Cubs and completed a Head Start residential engineering course at Sheffield University.

He also used his knowledge of farming to help develop the skills section of the award where he bought, reared and then sold a bullock at auction.

He also completed the Great North Run, raising more than £600 for children and young persons' cancer charity, CLIC Sargent.
