THE Craven Trust has approved grants totalling £7,800.

The beneficiaries include Settle Area Swimming Pool, which is trying to find new funding sources after Craven District Council removed its £16,000 handout in a bid to combat its own financial squeeze.

The pool will receive £1,500 towards a new electronic point-of-sale system.

And £1,000 will go to Burton-in-Lonsdale Bowling Club towards upgrading its clubhouse, which needs a new roof and floor, as well as improved amenities.

Bowling started in the village in 1967 when its two tennis courts were converted to a bowling green. The work will be carried out by club members.

Cancer Support Yorkshire will receive £1,000 for the redecoration of its premises in Otley Street, Skipton.

The charity helps cancer patients and their families with practical issues, such as information, transport and welfare rights advice, as well as emotional support through counselling, complementary therapies and a range of classes, courses and support groups.

A further grant of £650 has been secured by Skipton's Ermysted’s Grammar School towards a Muslim awareness event, due to take place in July.

Other beneficiaries include Sedbergh Music Festival, The Singing Teapot in Keighley, Holden Hall Users Group, Keighley Sea Cadets and Clothing Solutions.

The Craven Trust was set up in 1995 to promote and support local charitable and community activity, through a programme of constructive grant-making.

The trust gave out £24,563 to 42 local groups last year.

The next deadlines for applications are June 10 and September 16. Visit craventrust.org.uk for more details and to download application forms.
